🌳 Sustainability at the Pelican Centre: How we're reducing our eco impact

03 Oct 2024

The Pelican Centre, like many other organisations worldwide, is working actively to reduce our carbon footprint, creating a cleaner, greener community asset for our local area.

With energy costs on the increase, and awareness of ecological issues greater than ever, the Pelican Centre is actively working to reduce our carbon footprint, lowering our energy costs and creating a more sustainable centre for our local communities in the long-term.

From how we manage our waste to investment in green technologies, sustainability is a driver in many of the decisions made by the Centre's team. As a community asset, it's critical that we run our operations as efficiently as possible, consciously reducing our environmental impact to contribute towards a cleaner local area for the years to come.

How is the Pelican Centre reducing its environmental impact?

Continual investment helps us to operate sustainably and efficiently, with eco-conscious changes both large and small that make a positive difference to our community.

What happens to our waste?

We selected our waste management supplier based on its "zero-to-landfill" commitment. At the Pelican Centre over the last year:

  • ZERO waste has gone to landfill - a fantastic achievement, saving 1.4 tonnes of carbon!
  • 67% of waste has been used to create energy at an energy-from-waste facility
  • 33% of waste was recovered and recycled, including card, paper, metal and plastics
  • CO2 emissions have reduced by 7 tonnes

What about our energy usage?

Our energy supplier promotes clear sustainability commitments and makes proven investment in renewable energy sources, working towards net zero by 2050, and with intermediate objectives for 2025 and 2030 that keep the company on track.

  • The Pelican Centre's operational rating of "C" is above average. Typical buildings like ours are rated "D"
  • We use 34% less electricity than other buildings like ours
  • Our energy supplier achieved gross installed production capacity of 22Gw of renewable electricity at the end of 2023 through solar, onshore and offshore wind assets

Playing your part!

The Pelican Centre's community plays an important role in reducing our environmental impact. You're making a difference by:

  • Using water fountains to fill reusable water bottles
  • Reducing the amount of waste produced on site
  • Using facilities provided for recycling of plastics and paper
  • Using cloths instead of blue roll in the Gym, reducing waste by around 200KG every year!

What's coming up?

We're always taking steps to limit environmental impact wherever we can. Next on our list will be:

  • Installation of new solar panels, thanks to a recent Sport England grant (more about Sport England's grants for more than 300 pools UK-wide). Once installed, up and running, the solar PV panels will help us to produce our own, greener energy and to reduce our energy costs

  • Installation of a variable speed filtration system, which will operate our pool system more efficiently, reducing the circulation rate of the system when possible in order to reduce energy consumption. We'll save 26% on the running costs of the plant room alone once the system is operational!

Thank you for helping us to make an environmental difference

By taking out a membership, and by making small changes such as using the water fountains instead of disposable bottles and walking to the centre instead of driving, our Pelican Centre community is helping us to make a positive difference to our local environment.

Thank you!
