Pelican Centre backs Swim England's Don't Put a Cap on Swimming campaign

18 Sep 2023

The Pelican Centre has backed Swim England's latest Don't Put a Cap on Swimming campaign, even making an appearance in the organisation's promotional video!

Swim England launched its major new campaign in September 2023, which aims to promote the importance of sustainable swimming pools.

"Don't Put a Cap on Swimming" highlights the role that swimming pools play in the mental, physical and social health of our communities. Swim England estimates that swimming generates around £2.4billion a year in social value, providing local access for anyone to stay fit and active, to spend time with families and friends, and to help both children and adults learn a fantastic skill for life.

In the face of increasing financial pressures and increased running costs, the campaign calls on the Government to ensure that communities have access to sustainable pools, supporting vital activities and sports whilst also increasing access to outdoor swimming.

Swim England filmed its campaign video in a number of pools. Featuring Rebecca Adlington and Mark Foster, the video discusses why pools are so important to our all-round health and wellbeing, and the role they play in our communities.

Swimming's role in social value

Swim England's Value of Swimming report contains some interesting - and important - statistics about the role of pools and water-based activity in our lives.

  • Around 500,000 people over the age of 75 go swimming in England each year
  • 92% of children in England either 'like' or 'love' swimming 💙
  • 4.5million children in England would like to swim more often
  • Swimming helped to prevent 78,500 cases of ill health in 2022, with the largest health savings in dementia and diabetes
  • £35,859,685 is saved as a result of reduced GP and psychotherapy visits by those who swim regularly

The Pelican Centre's happy to support Don't Put a Cap on Swimming and Swim England's work to ensure sustainable swimming pools are accessible to communities across England (and the wider UK!).
