✔ Just for fun! We'd like to show off the colouring skills of our younger community, so pick up a colouring sheet from Reception & get arty this April.

🎨 Go for it - any designs you like, you don't have to use our 'Pelican' colours. And you can do more than one!

We're a proud community-owned asset, with fantastic facilities on the doorstep that help everyone locally to Feel Good. From fitness classes and our fully-equipped gym to swimming lessons for thousands of children, a place for friends to meet up and volunteering opportunities to learn new skills, get active or just get back into a routine, the Pelican Centre has been at the heart of our community since 2012. 

It's been great to see the Centre develop into a real success story for Tyldesley. We know maintenance and building works aren't always the easiest thing to live with though, so thank you for bearing with us! Every project we undertake makes a big difference to what we can offer to members.

There are more exciting things to come, so here's to the next 10 years!

The Pelican Centre, Tyldesley, celebrates 10 years of community ownership

Tyldesley community leisure and fitness centre and registered charity the Pelican Centre celebrates its 10^th anniversary on 1^st April 2022.

The Centre’s team plans a week of celebrations from 1^st-7^th April, kicking (or should that be splashing?) off with ‘Swim for 10p’ swimming sessions on 2^nd and 3^rd April for all Centre members.

Those joining the Pelican Centre as a member will get 1 month free if they sign up between 1^st-7^th April, and children’s competitions will help them get into the party spirit too!

The Pelican Centre’s story

Formerly Tyldesley Baths, the Pelican Centre was rescued by community members and opened in 2012. Operated by a small team of permanent staff, volunteers and trustees, the not-for-profit Centre offers clean, high-quality swimming, gym and class facilities, volunteering opportunities, community spaces and charitable support to those who need it.

Entirely self-funded, the charitable trust is the largest independent fitness centre in Wigan Borough and offers affordable, accessible and friendly leisure and fitness facilities to local people in Tyldesley, Atherton, Astley and the wider area, with around 950 members on its books.

10 years of Feel Good Fitness

Since 2012, the Pelican Centre has been an important part of local life. Some facts and figures:

• We've taught over 8000 children to swim
• 15 schools use our pool for all of their school swimming lessons
• Over 400 people access our fitness & community classes each week
• We’ve provided volunteering opportunities throughout the Centre since 2012
• We’ve trained 120 lifeguards since 2012

Over the last 10 years, our staff, trustees and members of the community have joined together to establish the Pelican as a focal point and much-needed community facility in the area, proving that there is great demand for independent, local centres such as ours. We’re now proud to provide support for other single-site community-led centres around the UK, passing on knowledge and advice that will enable other communities to benefit in the same way. We hope members enjoy our 10^th anniversary celebrations, and we’re already looking forward to the next decade!”
